To counter degradation and deforestation at global level, the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®) has developed a new instrument able to measure, preserve or improve the natural services and environmental values of certified forests. Natural services – defined as ecosystem services - consist of all those benefits that man gain from nature and forests, such as the supply of drinking water, food and timber, air purification, carbon fixing and many other natural regulatory mechanisms.
